"To desire nothing beyond what you have is surely happiness. Aboard a boat, it is frequently possible to achieve just that. That is why sailing is a way of life, one of the finest of lives." ― Carleton Mitchell
Winter isn't quite over yet, but here I am, already dreaming about our big adventure this Spring. For years, we’ve talked about it—sailing around the world—and now, that dream is finally within reach! Let the adventures begin!
Unlike our usual spontaneous trips, this time, my husband and I are meticulously planning every detail. We’ve been scouring the French Mediterranean coast, pre-selecting sailboats that could soon become our new home. By April, we’ll choose our perfect match and embark on this journey. Once the sailboat is ours, we’ll take a couple of months to refurbish, renovate, and prepare her for life at sea. We’ve even started brainstorming names for our new floating home!
We already have a clear vision of the type of sailboat we need, and we’re working closely with brokers to help navigate the technicalities—everything from assessing the boat to handling paperwork and insurance. We’re determined to do this right, and by the time we’re ready to set sail, we’ll have completed additional RYA training courses for added confidence on the open waters. Our little munchkin has even started his Duckling swimming lessons—because every sailor starts somewhere, right?
There’s so much to do: inventory lists, mood boards, equipment checks, route planning, and of course, preparing for our temporary relocation to France. Some days, it feels overwhelming, but the excitement of this new chapter fuels me. I know my family and I are ready for this change, and we can’t wait to fully embrace life at sea!
Our plan is to take it six months at a time. In the first phase, starting with our relocation to France in April, we’ll set sail in June, making our way from France to Turkey by October—just in time for Thanksgiving. After that, we’ll reassess. If we decide to continue, our second phase will take us along the Middle Eastern and North African coastlines, sailing from Turkey to Morocco. By April 2021, we’ll have reached the Canary Islands and the Azores, and from there, who knows? Maybe we’ll sail back to France, explore the Northern Sea, or perhaps venture across the Atlantic to the Caribbean. The future is still unwritten, and that’s part of the thrill.
What excites me the most is the opportunity to discover new cultures, countries, foods, and people. I can’t wait to share every adventure and moment of this sea-bound lifestyle with you all!
In preparation for this journey, we’re selling nearly everything we own—letting go of personal belongings, using our savings and passive income, and securing sponsors and partners to support us along the way. We’ve even set up a Fund My Travel page where anyone can contribute and win awesome prizes in return. Yes, sailing and traveling can be expensive, but the life-changing experiences are absolutely worth it.
Beyond travel, one of our core values is giving back. Everywhere we go, we’ll look for ways to make a difference. Whether it’s helping a local school get much-needed supplies, offering our marketing expertise to a small business, speaking at events to raise awareness on topics we care about, or even something as simple as picking up rubbish along the coastlines—we’re committed to contributing positively to the communities we visit. This is also a lesson we want to instill in our son: the importance of helping others and protecting our planet.
I can’t wait to take you all on this incredible journey with us—one wave at a time!
